Setting up podcasting is cheap.

To create an audio podcast you only need a computer and microphone. There is a lot of software available and some are free. For example, Audacity is free audio-editing software that runs on Windows and Mac. Another option for Mac users is Apple's GarageBand.

To create a video podcast you will also need a mini DV camcorder and software:

Windows

  • Avid's Media Composer
  • MovieMaker
  • QuickTime Pro7
  • Adobe's Premier

Mac

  • iMovie
  • QuickTime Pro7
  • FinalCutPro

There are great podcasts out there which are attracting several thousands of subscribers, even though they were created with basic equipment. The basic hardware like microphones and camcorders must be good quality but the most important is the quality of the podcast's content.

Podcasting Products

Audio books, MP3 files - This is the most powerful aspect of podcasting. People can listen to audio while driving cars, riding bikes or horses, jogging, walking or just being lazy. Audio is a very powerful and convenient media.

Videos - What would be a better for a travel web site than short video clips about the country's beaches, or mountains, or accommodation, etc.? You can convert your video clips to DVD or to pay-per-view streaming (on demand). very useful for educational and training web sites too.

These are three possible products, which are really sub-products from your audio and/or video content used in your podcast. There are many other ways to use your rich media directly on your web site, but that is beyond this article. So let's go back to podcasting
