Submitting Sitemaps

Creating and submitting sitemaps to the major search engines will accelerate our visibility by making it easier for the search engines to monitor your site. A sitemap is basically just a list of all the linked pages on your website. Google in particular provides a lot of information and statistics on how it views your site on its Webmaster Tools pages.

Create a Sitemap

Whoever builds and maintains your site should keep the sitemap file updated. If for some reason you don't have one then there is a very useful website that willl create one for you FREE.

Go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com. Select the XML sitemap option, create a file in your website root directory called sitemap.xml and paste in the output from this site. Full instructions are given. Generally your web hosting service should provide a sitemap building utility.

Submitting Sitemaps at Google

Google Webmaster Tools

  1. Go to the Google webmaster Page: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login
  2. If you don't have an account then click on the Create an account now link to set one up.
  3. Log in to Google Webmaster Tools. This will take you to the Dashboard page.
  4. If your site URL is displayed then Google has visited your site and listed it. Click on the URL name to go to the Overview page. If you don't see your site URL displayed then click the Add Site to list it. Fill in your full domain name e.g. http://www.example.com.
  5. On the Overview page there is a menu on the left side. Click on the Sitemaps text link. This takes you to the Sitemaps page.
  6. On the Sitemaps page click on the Add a Sitemap text link.
  7. Click on the Add General Web Sitemap drop down menu option and enter the name of your sitemap e.g. sitemap.xml.
  8. Click on Add Web Sitemap to submit it. An acknowledgement will be displayed and your sitemap is submitted

You can log back into your dashboard to monitor the progress and correct any errors or make revisions that you feel are appropriate.

Submitting Sitemaps at Yahoo!

  1. You will need an account at Yahoo first, so if you don't have one then go to http://www.yahoo.com and open one.
  2. Go to the website submission page https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit
  3. Enter the URL for your website or webpage you would like to submit and click on the Submit URL button.
  4. Your website URL will appear in the list with the status set to not authenticated.
  5. Click on not autheticated and follow the instructions on the folowing screen. This involves, either creating a file in your root directory or adding a spcific META TAG into the header of your home page.
  6. Click on the My Sites text link to return to the list of your websites.
  7. Click on manage to display the Manage Site page.
  8. Enter the name of your Sitemap, select Web Site Feed and then click on Add Feed.

Submitting Sitemaps at MSN Live

  1. Go to http://webmaster.live.com/ and click on the Sign In To Use The Tools button.
  2. Click on Sign Up if you do not have an account and follow the instructions. Otherwise enter your login information.
  3. On the Add a website page enter your website URL and the full name of your sitemap file (optional).
  4. Follow the instructions to create a file in your root directory and authenticate this file.

Submitting Sitemaps to Ask

  1. Simply paste http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.YOURWEBSITEURL/SITEMAP.XML into your browser and submit it.
